Conversion activities cover 3 main areas:
- Structural conversions (Projects with focus on either extending or changing vessel functionality)
- Downgrading (Focus on vessels which are no longer certified to operate in specific areas and for which the investments are non-applicable for re-certification. Downgraded conversions can keep these vessels operational in other areas, or can prepare them to be sold to other operators)
- Mega yacht conversion (Conversion of professional vessels into mega yachts)
After 30-40 years, repairing or renovation of sea going vessels typically becomes uneconomical. This implies the end-of-life of many of these vessels. Managing the end-of-life of professional vessels according to environmental and safety standards (Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships 2009) is an increasing challenge worldwide.
Activities in the end-of-life process:
- Logistics: Organization of the logistics to bring the vessel to the scrapping yard
- Pre-scrapping cleaning: Before the dismantling is starting, all hazardous and toxic mate- rials such as asbestos, heavy metals, hydro-carbons, ozone-depleting substances, oil, etc … are removed.
- Dismantling: After the vessel is declared as “clean”, the dismantling is starts based on strict safety procedures. All dismantled materials are sorted according to their specific characteristics and stored accordingly.
- Waste management & recycling: The dismantled and sorted materials are maximally re-entered in the recycling industry. The remaining waste is treated according to environmental standards.
